Eastern Cuba

River Toa, BaracoaBaracoa

A wonderfully diverse region, the ‘Oriente’ province of Cuba is dominated by the towering mountain range of the Sierra Maestra, which sweeps down to the Caribbean shore and its unspoilt natural beaches. At the heart of the province is Santiago de Cuba, a city rich in history, colonial architecture and sites associated with the country’s struggles for independence. Further east lies the mountainous national park of Baconao, the US naval base at Guantanamo and finally on the very tip of the island, the peaceful community of Baracoa, Cuba’s oldest town and the site of Columbus’ first landing. On the northern coast of the province is the beautiful low-key resort of Guardalavaca with undulating hills, large lagoons and stunning natural beaches.

How to reach Eastern Cuba

Eastern Cuba may be reached by a twice weekly Cubana flight from London Gatwick to Holguin, which is also served by a network of domestic flights. Santiago and Baracoa may also be reached by air. The region can be further explored by self-drive hire car, private or shared transfers.
